It was pointed out to me 2 years ago when I started working at mobile app startup that people born before 1980 tend to put cell phones face-down when not in use more often than those born since 1980. This is likely a remnant of childhood conditioning from hanging up land-line phones, which all have gravity/weight-triggered power cut-off switches that required microphone/speaker-away from the user hang ups. Whereas smart phones are most effective when put down screen-up. That way, not only is the screen less likely to be scratched, the user also gets a device that acts like a clock and gives at-a-glance IM updates and caller ID screening.
