It was such a honor to be interviewed for this article, as it is a topic that I am all too familiar with, both from my own experiences in the gym but also from my academic pursuits. Thanks UBC Ubyssey! And also, a huge thanks to Amanda Wanner for passing my name along for this opportunity. Space matters. Although seemingly gender neutral to those who are embedded within it, the fitness imperative has strong gendered prescriptions and results, that are both created and reinforced within the gym culture. Stop for a moment the next time you are in the gym. Take a second to see how it is laid out, organized, the types of equipment down to the marketing materials. In fitness spaces we dont just build bodies. We constantly create social, cultural, and physical capital based on our fitness abilities, physiques, and comprehension of skill and wisdom. The fitness industry’s main goal should be about working with people, helping people and creating knowledge - not about recreating stereotypes about the body. ubyssey.ca/sports/gendered-gyms-how-equipment-layout-reinforces-stereotypes843/
