It was totally f**king ground breaking when the stand-up and sitcom talent, bit of a wild man, took on the role of - first - a truth-telling radio personality in Good Morning Vietnam (1988), a teacher who refused to compromise in Dead Poets Society (1989), a brilliant and compassionate physician in Awakenings (around 1990) and on and on. Dramatic roles for a wild funny man in recovery and grappling with too much spotlight and substance abuse? His art evolved. He evolved it. He kept taking risks and sometimes failed, sure. But he evolved it. It is utterly tragic that even the many fans, friends and family who loved him couldnt save him from depression. I think of him partying somewhere with others in the same boat who we didnt expect to go so soon, David Foster Wallace, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jimi Hendrix. Quite a hot tub full of stars. Rest in peace Robin Williams. Recognized in your own life time, but perhaps under-appreciated for your talents, truly deep as they were, your creativity. Forgive us, we were too busy laughing-- because thats how good you were. My condolences to Robin Williams friends, family, pupils, colleagues and all who will miss him for reasons more personal.
