It was with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of Charlie Sweeney (RIP). Charlie will be fondly remembered by everyone at RGU with memories of the early 90s when RGU were the dominant force in Down Senior Football. An Armagh man, Charlie took over RGU in 1993, after the club had won two SFCs and a league title. In 1993 he guided them again to SFC glory as well as runners up in Ulster. Two more runners up in Down SFC followed in the 1994 and 1995 seasons. After some time away Charlie returned in 2000/2001 for another period at the helm. We are indebted to Charlie for the professionalism and dedication he brought to the club. Allied to that he was a genuinely decent guy and though Charlie’s death brings great sadness, it was a pleasure to have known him and worked with him. To Charlie’s wife Martha and family we send our deepest sympathy, as well as to his brother Gerry who was a former player with RGU along with being a mentor to many players who came through the Red High. A Mhuire Banríon na nGael, Guigh ar a anam Uasal.
