It will be interesting to read the Fire Investigators report on this one. Looks as though it may not have been the incinerator after all. Either way its a reminder to all that a clean, well prepared property is paramount for fire safety. If the lease holders story is true then he will shoulder an unfortunate burden. While it certainly sounds as though he has done a lot to make the property safer, a single bottle left in the open may have been all it took to cause this disaster. From what I saw on the many parts of the fireground yesterday, there are dozens of properties that made Steptoe and Son look like amateurs. It could have started at any of these places but on the other hand, even on the worst day, fires dont start without an ignition source which is why these events are generally few and far between. Removing all possible ignition sources and the media by which fire can spread is the best way to reduce risk. Sadly, these are very difficult to achieve around the likes of these rural properties.
