It would be great to see those lost 19 minutes somewhere. As for the hostile reception from the NY critics, Kubrick said in the Playboy interview that the critics were too literal minded to see what was happening, expecting the dialogue to carry the picture, as most traditional films have too often done. And MGMs last minute decision to not use this image as a poster for their 1971 reissue is so typically chickenshit from a business standpoint. The truth is MGM really didnt know what they had here: a game-changing cinematic masterpiece of unprecedented proportions.
