It would have been his 91st birthday on Saturday. I have no illusions that he would have made it to that milestone. However, I realize that every time a child loses a parent before they are 18, it affects everything they do for their entire life, many times in ways that they never know. So next time you have to miss one of those funerals, you only missed day one. Your support begins after the dirt covers the moment. No matter what happens in your day, be there when the memories need your smile, your laugh, your shoulder. The result will not be broadcast; it will warm a heart that need a gentle touch.
