It would seem that while all the 4 mainstream soaps have upped their games over the summer months, one of them has not seen the results it was hoping for & is currently coming up with a plan to boost ratings. According to a report in The Sun newspaper, bosses at Coronation Street are concerned by the significant drop in viewing figures since head-honcho Phil Collinson left last year. The publication claims that a whopping 1.5million less viewers have been tuning in to the hit ITV soap this summer, with stats of only around 6.7million recorded, as opposed to a peak of 9.5million back when Collinson was in charge. In order to try & pull this back new boss, Stuart Blackburn, is apparently brainstorming ideas to try & attract more viewers, with another huge stunt & disaster, much like the tram crash to mark the shows 50th birthday or Rovers Return fire of last year, not necessarily being ruled out as an option. Another way Blackburn has come up with to try & raise figures is to bring back some old, familiar faces. As we have previously reported, the exec producer has already confirmed one classic character to return next year, whilst not revealing which one, but now it seems that they may be being joined by a few more! In a bid to fill the gap left by Corrie favourite Michelle Keegan & in light of several other popular cast members leaving, either for good or maternity leave such as Chris Gascoyne, Marc Bayliss, Georgia May Foote, Jennie McAlpine, Paula Lane & Catherine Tyldesley, it is rumoured that Kevin Kennedy & Martin Hancock will be returning to the cobbles of Weatherfield next year to reprise their roles as Curly Watts & Spider Nugent. The paper quotes a show insider as saying on the matter: There has been much scratching of heads in recent weeks with the viewing figures. There have been meetings to discuss the situation as they can’t fall any lower.
