It would seem to me that whoever issued the 3rd anniversary ‘of the 25 January revolution’ statement in the name of the #Muslim_Brotherhood in #Egypt must have done so in response to suggestions from certain individuals or circles who believed that such conciliatory language might help repair the damage and bridge the gap between the Brotherhood and their critics. Having read the statement I find that whatever the writers seem to apologise for was not something the Brotherhood did wrong and warranted an apology. Thinking well of the army and the judiciary was, in fact, consistent with the general popular sentiment in Egypt. Egyptians have always taken pride in their army and their judiciary, two institutions they believed were nonpartisan and immune from going astray. If the Brotherhood was wrong here then the entire Egyptian people were equally wrong. The last sentence in the statement seems to suggest that the Brotherhood are sorry for having monopolised the truth, excluded others and distributed certificates of patriotism at will. I find nothing as remote from the truth as this preposterous claim. Those who continue to blame the Brotherhood in Egypt for what they allege had been mistakes are simply having a go at the victim. This is very much similar to holding a woman victim of rape responsible for what happened to her to let the criminal perpetrator of such despicable crime get away with his crime or at least to dilute the awfulness of his offence. The real sinners in Egypt today are those who allied themselves with the perpetrators of the coup, for by doing so they shot democracy in the back. It is such people who ought to repent, apologise and atone for what they did, and it is not at all too late to do so. As for the Brotherhood, whose leaders and many of their young men and women are either behind bars or on the run or have already been martyred, they and those who stood by them in their predicament will one day soon emerge victorious. The Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and those who are allied with them are today the vanguards in the struggle for liberty, dignity and legitimacy. And they will win, insha Allah.
