Its a fish-eat-fish world here at Little St. Simons. Here is a up-close look at one of the unique predator fishes found here, an Atlantic Needlefish. This species can be found along the Atlantic coast from Maine to Brazil. Often confused with similar shaped barracuda and gar, Atlantic Needlefish have an elongated body shape and a mouth full of sharp teeth which they use to hunt other smaller fish near the surface of the water. This surface feeding behavior makes them quick prey for avian visual hunters such as Black Skimmers and Osprey. More excitingly to you avid fishermen out there, they are also one of the favorite prey of Little St. Simons most glamorous piscovorous fish, the Atlantic Tarpon. -Naturalist Cassandra
