Its a sad commentary on the state of our planet (and worth noting to those types who insist man cant possibly affect such a large ecosystem!) that the search for MH370 has revealed just how much goddamn GARBAGE is floating all over the ocean. If you arent following this - ever since its been missing, there have been constant reports of debris fields that have turned out to be just the usual garbage. Were not talking about a random cereal box here and there - these are big chunks of whatever that are visible from aircraft, or even satellite imagery, apparently. And not an isolated this or that but just piles of crap everywhere. These are not also heavily travelled shipping lanes or outside major harbors where youd (unfortunately, but reasonably) expect this kind of thing. The big area they were searching in the high south Indian Ocean is definitely not a common shipping area - possibly the areas farther north are, with all the islands between SE Asia and Australia, I could see that. Its really astounding how much trash is just randomly floating in these largely untraveled areas. (And if youve never heard of it, go read about the huge areas saturated with plastic floating in all the major oceans. Though its not whats commonly claimed a giant floating island of garbage but in reality mostly near-microscopic suspended bits, its enormous and incredibly polluting. Heres a good start: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Pacific_garbage_patch)
