Its a tough sell, instruction. As mentioned in the last column we are all ever so slightly gladiatorial and yet the desire to be better hasnt quite punched out the reasoning behind not asking for help on track. And thats strange, right? Now, OK, there are some good reasons not to, since there are some instructors who prefer to instruct in the classroom, which wont work. There are some instructors who will tell you that they can instruct from the pit wall, and that wont work either. There are modern technologies that harness data and some will try to instruct from that, and that finds its own limitations. There are all the instructors out there that will happily climb into your car, and now were getting closer. There are very few that want to climb into your head, and yet that is where all the good work is done. We have spoken countless (probably literally, now) times about how motorsport of any kind is about 95% in your head, so we shouldnt find it strange that this IS where the good work is done, but perhaps what we might find a little confusing at least is that so little of it goes on, after all most sportsman have coaches amongst the rest of the entourage that the top ones employ. The motor skills are all well and good, as your drive to the shops will readily attest, but without what goes on in your head your hands and feet would be doing less than a hibernating tortoise, and yet they are an intrinsic part of the whole performance driving process. Each time you do anything physical your brain is involved, and each time your brain is involved it is microprocessing on an unfathomable scale, doing a whole host of complex calculations based on information, risk and probability, and all done in a split second. So, why do most pay so little attention to it, and instead its all hands this and feet that? You need motivation to go to the track, you need direction to employ the skills, BUT you need confidence to go faster, right? That confidence can be derived in so many ways, but they all have one thing in common - the roots of all of them are located in your head. And that brings us full circle. #trackday
