Its all a matter of priorities. On the same day that Detroit announced that its municipal pensioners had agreed to an enforced 4.5% cut to their retirement, the city also announced that it had essentially taken their money to buy the city a new sports arena. For anyone who thinks Detroit made a good decision (which is how the city defends its position— after all, its economic development!), this report also includes links to studies that show sporting venues actually have a negative value to cities that have invested in them.
