Its always about poverty. Its always about class and it has always - TopicsExpress

Its always about poverty. Its always about class and it has always been that way. It doesnt matter if the method of class control and perpetuation is due to racism. Imagine if everyone in this neighborhood were middle-class. Would true racists be any less racist? No. Would that racism still hurt and be a destructive force? Yes. But economic integration is true integration for all people. It empowers people by greatly expanding their opportunities. It creates stability by providing security in the present which allows you to plan for the future. Whether you like it or not, capitalism is a preferable system of economic organization, and as such money does make the world go round. The ability to choose how and where your money is spent (beyond your basic needs) is empowering, democratizing, and in many ways it is freedom. The simple question I ask everyone when this issue comes up is: Why does poverty exist? If your answer is that it is the natural order of things and nothing can be done to change that natural order, then you are merely admitting that poverty is not a choice and neither is any other class based on wealth. Some people are destined to be more wealthy and some people are always destined to remain poor. If you answer that question any other way, then poverty becomes a problem that can have a solution. Maybe not a perfect solution, but something that is better than whatever we are doing now. I have my own ideas for solutions, and unfortunately they are borderline forms of social engineering which in most respects I do not approve of. However, I see this as humanitys most important issue for the present and the future that a small amount of meddling might be worth it.
