Its amazing how at 24 I have 2 associate degrees; one in health sciences and another in veterinary technology, plus I stayed another year so I could get a bachelors degree so I could be considered a veterinary technologist. But that wasnt enough for New York State; after graduation I still had to take a test that was over $400 so I could get a LICENSE to become a Veterinary Technologist, even though I had already spent almost 4 years at college and spent over $64,000 to get a degree just so I could take that $400 test... After getting my license we still have to do continuing education which is costly thank god I work for a clinic that pays for us to go. I dont regret my decision to become a vet tech, I absolutely love what I do, I love the animals and clients I work with, and I couldnt ask for better coworkers. But tonight I got my Sallie Mae student loan payment... Without notice they more then doubled my payments a month and told me there is nothing I can do about it. I never thought that at 24 I would feel like I made the biggest mistake of my life by going to college, I could barely afford all my monthly payments as it was, like my car payment, car insurance, federal student loans, etc. and now I will officially not be able to afford gas to get to and from my full time job as a Veterinary Technician. I will also be losing my health insurance in a month and wont have money to pay for it on my own (thank you Obama Care). What has happened to todays youth? I feel like I cant go anywhere in life until I pay off my school loans, college shouldnt be such a burden and shouldnt be a must because of the financial burden it places on people. All I wanted to do was go to college so I could become successful, but it left me with more worry and debt then I could ever imagine. I never thought Id regret that choice as much as I do.
