Its been 50 years! I was seven years old but that tragic day November 22, 1963 is etched in my mind as if it was just yesterday. I lived in Berkeley, California and remember my teacher stepping out on ftont porch of the portable classroom, tears streaming down her face at about 10 AM Pacific time during recess and told us all that President Kennedy had been killed. School was dismissed, I went home and my Mom, Dad, my brother and I stayed glued to the television through weekend and the State Funeral on Monday. It was the first and only time I saw my Dad cry. Although a child of seven I understood everything and even now years later when watching documentaries I still tear up when remembering the events of that terrible weekend and watching it play before me again. November 22, 1963 and the days after were not days of politics, the Washington two step or finger pointing. We were a Nation in shock at the loss of a father, a husband a leader and a man whose history was still being written struck down by an assassins bullet. Yes a lot has come forth in the 50 years since that day both good and bad about JFK. The whos and whys of the assassination have been debated since and will continue to be debated for decades to come. But setting aside all of the controversies and speculations the innocence of America died with Kennedy on that Friday in November and while losing a man who was a decent leader and could have possibly been one of our finer Presidents the greatest tragedy is the America that ended on that terrible day.
