Its been a great weekend for Rugby at St Georges. A message from Mr Harris to all those involved in coaching rugby at the school. Dear all I hope you have all had a great weeekend in the sun. I would like to take the opportunity to show off how great we are and thank you all for the contributions you are making. Here is what has happened this weekend. 1 - On Friday night Maro Itoje captained the England u20 squad who thumped Wales.this is a young lad who is proud of his st Georges roots and is destined for big things. 2 - Saturday morning over 50 year 7 boys played in either the A, B or C team. Watford Grammar (with 180 boys per year group compared to our 90) could only get 43 players meaning the C team was 13/14 a side. Results didnt go to plan but I for one loved seeing the faces of the boys at the end. 3- Sunday was the u13 Berko 7s. One of the best competitions in the south of England. Teams from Wales, South West and the Midlands all travel and expect big things. Our boys were simply outstanding - winning their group. Those who have been to this before will know that this in itself is seriously impressive. We then entered the main cup competition and drew out John Fisher school - one of the biggest and most established rugby playing schools in the south of England. They had smashed their group and did not concede a single point in a much tougher group than ours which included Campion school. The boys were defeated 19-24 with the last play of the game. The boys could not have done anymore and were out on their feet. I was so proud of them and the staff and parents there. 4- Also on Sunday, this time on TV, Owen Farrell kicking Wales out of the game - another old Georgian who has benefitted from our rugby programme. And then 78 minutes he is replaced by George Ford. Ford was only the school for 1 year, I believe and was part of the 7s side that made the final of Rossyln Park when he was u13. Coincidence that his international debut was same day as our u13 nearly caused a massive upset. 5- This week - tour meeting for the u13 and u14 boys going on tour to Paris (eurodisney) at Easter. Staff and parents giving upeaster holidays to give more opportunity to our boys. Not bad for a little old state school are we? Will have to go now before I get too emotional but when having a bad day or it is raining again and you are stuck indoors please remember the superb opportunity we are giving and believe me when I say you are doing an excellent job. It is a pleasure to work with you all. - even you Mr Daish (currently with the National Sweden squad - they were learning to pass and catch today). Now whilst we can take credit of this one we are also very proud of Scarlett Cooper-Wall. Scarlett Cooper-Wall (St George’s from 2006 to 2011) has been capped twice by England U20 Women this season. She is another one (like Maro) who has every chance of gaining a full England cap one day soon!
