Its been a long day- with an awesome outcome. Fully expecting to end up without my dad today- he cheated death again and proved doctors have no clue. As yoda would say the will to live in this one is strong. My mom cried tears of joy more than a few times- He looked absolutely fantastic in the recovery room- color has returned. For those of you with aging parents- I urge you to take a more active role in managing your parents health care. The older generations trust doctors implicitly- and tend not to ask questions as much. Five years ago a surgeon told him this surgery was too risky, and after 5 years of decreasing health thanks to living with an enlarging hernia- he was in worse shape for surgery. The anesthesiologist predicted that he wouldnt be able to survive surgery because of his deteriorated heart function via their tests. Cardiology wasnt in love with the idea either. Reality- had I not pushed them to operate- he would have been in worse shape, since most of what had descended was his small bowel and he was suffering from malabsorbtion as well. So many of you wished him well, prayed, kept him in your thoughts- and his love for his wife of 60 years proved that modern medicine isnt as scientific as they think it is. Im so relieved that I pushed this forward- and that the outcome was positive. Hes not fully though the woods yet - but, hes in awesome shape compared to what he was. Thank you everyone. And thanks to an awesome VA Surgeon who took a chance- yes, this was done at the VA. They do a lot of great things there that arent reported in the news.
