Its been a long frustrating night. Lab tests are all improving. At its worst his WBC was up to 28,000. Today it is 20,000. His kidney function tests are better than they were yesterday, his hgb is down again from 10 something to 8 something, but that is to be expected with the amount of fluids he has had. He is coughing, wheezing, and gets ridiculously short of breath when he gets out of bed. Hes also coughing up thick, yellowish sputum. Going for a chest x-ray in a couple of minutes. Doctor says he expects all of this to happen. He told us that during surgery when they washed all the infected blood out (which was definitely infected because it is growing gram negative organisms), it causes SIRS or systemic inflammatory response. And his illeus isnt getting any better. Everybody here (and my own medical knowledge) tells me that all of this is to be expected, but it feels like a step backwards to Gerald. He is really down in the dumps today. Hes tired. He is in more pain from coughing all night instead of less. Hes grumpy at me (which I can take) because Im tired and not exactly cheerful when Im helping. So, today, I need to be strong so he can be depressed.
