Its been a trying week with another mammoth one to get through, - TopicsExpress

Its been a trying week with another mammoth one to get through, but tonights Presidents Star Charity was good moment. Its the usual bustle of notable performers and movers & shakers in the holding room, but I find myself striking up conversation with a couple of 12yr olds from Ain Society (they performed the introduction on the Kolintangs) in their wonderful white laced costumes, side braids and big smiles. Its only halfway through our chat that I realise that each of these kids is battling cancer at varying stages. One of the girls steps up to me. I stupidly assume she wants a selfie (we take one eventually), but she then pulls me aside and tells me how much the willows music and my writing inspires her to fight on. Shes speaks of going through her 2nd round of chemo and radiation, and it takes every muscle in me not to break down and take apparent pity on her. She smiles through the very bleak words and doesnt give me an inch of room to sympathise. We take a shot and exchange pleasantries, and I excuse myself to a corner to wallow in a massively confused state; downright pissed that there is nothing more that I can do and wishing that I could give every fibre of my being to help, but grateful that my work is moving past first-tier, and actually means something. Blood bags and bone marrow I have few, but what a wonderful thing to create for someone else. In an inherently self-important industry, we forget how selfless and empowering our work can be. Tonight I am reminded again. And tonight I shall sleep well.
