Its been a while Ive been pondering on this. African students - TopicsExpress

Its been a while Ive been pondering on this. African students claim that College education in Africa is difficult compared to other developed countries especially the U.S. This is actually true as Ive experienced both ends for at least 2 years each. So why do we still remain backward in technology and we dont produce innovative individuals? I think I found the answer. American colleges have implanted the culture of hard work on their students by assigning a lot of homework to students and make it a significant portion of their final grade (like 30% or even higher) as an incentive to encourage school work outside class. Students spend a large portion of their day doing ASSIGNMENTS and end up solving a lot of problem, thereby creating a reasonable amount of experience necessary to solve as many problems as possible in that course. This is applicable especially in the field of mathematic. Students get familiar with a lot of problem after getting exposed to most problems attached to a class. Nigerian Colleges dont do this. They give homework even if its a lot, they make it about 3% of your final grade. Or even at times the professors dont grade them and this doesnt give incentive for you to even do them since they dont really impact your final grade anyway. This makes them less exposed to enough problems they need to solve in any class except for exceptional students (less than 1%.) The Nigerian educational sector should adjust the curriculum and expose students to a lot of problems by giving out reasonable graded homework.
