Its been a while since I studied chem but a few things I have seen - TopicsExpress

Its been a while since I studied chem but a few things I have seen posted in here didnt make sense to me. One of them is putting salt straight into the ammonia bath. This is totally unnecessary. It may in fact reduce the potency of the ammonia by creating ammonium salts and lye (not sure at what temperature this would occur). In any case, it does nothing to help the process as neither are volatile. Also is the lack of understanding in the role that mustard plays in patina. The main ingredient in mustard is vinegar (weak acid) which will inhibit the patina process and in effect, simply acts as a mask. It does have a small amount of salt as well though - this is what causes the slight discoloration seen in some pics where people used only mustard (no fuming). The result of this reaction is minimal. If anyone has better understanding of this stuff please do correct me here.
