Its early Christmas morning and here I am thinking about the evolution of the role and selection of Middle Blockers in volleyball. The previous convention is you put your tallest players in MB position surrounded with two Receiver Attackers whose selection rule was not much dependent on height. The game (in international womens volley, at least) has now shifted to the previously designated RAs doing most of the aggressive blocking. Since 2008, the RAs are now called Wing-Attackers. Moving the emphasis of their defensive function from receiving to blocking. In the emerging systems being adopted by various international teams, the MBs are no longer tall quick-spiking blockers but take on a utility role on top of their blocking function in the middle position. This development was pushed by an efficient libero and superior blocking techniques that make tempo 1 attacks inefficient in womens game.
