Its funny, the little things that you miss when living in a foreign land. Of course the biggest thing, and the only thing that really matters, is people: our family and friends who we love so much. Other things I actually notice that I miss are trivial, but .... * I have missed stopping at a convenience store for gas (that isnt $5-5.25 a gallon!) and picking up a fountain Diet Coke. Not one gas station here has fountain sodas. * I miss kitchen conveniences, like a dishwasher and an ice maker. My sweet husband does the dishes (I do the cooking!) and we use ice trays. * Miss being able to drink and cook with tap water. The water isnt potable here, so we buy huge bottles of water, for which we have a crock with a spigot that sits on a wooden stand on our kitchen counter. * I miss the seasons - and this surprised me a little. As much as I love the ocean view here, I love football weather too! And there is nothing better than a White Christmas! * Really missing the variety of meat and produce available in the States. On Saipan, the grocery stores get a shipment once a week - unless its delayed - and I usually go Friday evening or Saturday and see what new items they have. The produce is often already in various states of decay by the time it reaches us, so its best to hit the farmers market on Saturday mornings. They have a limited selection of locally grown produce, but it is fresh. And they are so sweet to tell you how to cook things if you have no idea! * Along those lines, I cant wait to have Campbell peaches and Missouri Beefsteak tomatoes! * Oh, how I miss Sonic half-price happy hour drinks and McDonalds $1 Diet Cokes! And Dairy Queen Poplar Bluff Blizzards! * There is no REAL BBQ here, either. Korean BBQ is tasty, but its not Dexter BBQ or Hickory House or Strawberrys. I could go on, but I do want to be clear - this is just a light-hearted look at things I am thinking of right now, as we prepare for our move. We are making a list of things we cant wait to do when we get back to Missouri. For me, it is helping distract from the sadness of all that I will miss when I leave Saipan. God has taught me during this journey that there are wonderful things to be found about where you live, if you will have a positive attitude and look for them. As far as Im concerned, Poplar Bluff, Missouri is an awesome place to live, with amazing people and businesses. Homeward bound in two weeks!
