Its going to hurt more if you drive while distracted! Proposed new legislation in Ontario would increase fines for distracted drivers and impose new rules to keep cars and trucks one metre away from bicycles. Transportation Minister Glen Murray says drivers caught using cellphones will face three demerit points and a maximum fine of one thousand dollars under his bill. Murray says he looked at what works well in other jurisdictions and found clear rules for motorists and cyclists in Manhattan that ease congestion in that city and that can work here. He says some cars give only inches while others give a dangerously wide path for bicycles, and the one-metre rule will make everyone safer. The Canadian Automobile Association says its time distracted driving become as socially unacceptable as drunk driving and says increased penalties were needed because education has not worked. The Share the Road advocacy group welcomed the increased penalties for drivers who ``door cyclists, which will be a maximum of one thousand dollars under the new bill and three demerit points, up from two.
