Its hard to believe that Kurt Cobain died 20 years ago today. Part of why is because i feel like his impact and music has been perpetually present ever since. In many ways rock music never moved beyond Nirvana or survived the aftermath. Ive read so many rock is dead articles over the past 20 years. It was definitely never the same at least. Kurt & Nirvana changed my life. I related so much to Nevermind when i was 12 and 13 just learning how to play guitar. Teen Spirit and Polly were two of the first songs i ever learned how to play. For all the people who act like Kurt and Nirvana werent that great, i think thats complete crap. There was something special about him and his songs. You could see yourself in him. All your flaws and pain and joy and beauty. It was a universal thing that millions of people connected to. You can go on and on about your Pavement, and your My Bloody Valentine, and your Sonic Youth all you want but they didnt have that special thing. Im working the door at a show today full of teenagers. Ive seen at least 3 Nirvana/Kurt Cobain t-shirts. 20 years later and kids born in 2000 are still experiencing that connection. Thats powerful stuff. - Chris
