Its hard to believe that The Goonies was filmed 30 years ago (yikes). It is one of my top 5 favorite movies, ever, and as a kid I used to wish like crazy that they would release a sequel because I didnt want the adventures to ever end. I know Im not alone in being a Goonies fan. This was one of my favorite adventure stories growing up...and why I still love anything to do with a group of friends exploring and getting into mischief, especially when caves and waterfalls and pirate ships are involved. Obviously there are a lot of mixed feelings among die-hard Goonies fans, regarding the sequel. First, theres the fact that Hollywood seems to be operating in safe mode these days by going back to old franchises that made money in the 80s and 90s (Im very much looking forward to the new Terminator because I hated all of them after T2...but a Twins sequel, a Mrs. Doubtfire sequel, a Conan sequel? Come on...) Second, theres the thinking of how you cant top a classic, and trying to do a sequel would only diminish the original (Will is leaning toward that school of thought) Third, theres the fact that the target audience for new movies, for better or worse, is always a younger age bracket, and the people with the most nostalgic connection to this movie are in their late 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond. Do most 15 or 16 year-olds today even know about the Goonies, if their parents or grandparents havent had them watch it? Im not sure. I understand and acknowledge all those points, but for me there is only one reason I have reservations about the sequel: the fact that the actors who portrayed Sloth, Rosalita, and most importantly Mama Fratelli (played by my beloved Anne Ramsey) have all passed away. Yes, the movie focused on the kids, Mikey and his companions. But without any of the supporting actors--even Rosalita--the original Goonies would NOT have been as amazing as it was. Not having them in the sequel...especially not having Mama Fratelli...will be very sad to me. I see only three options: 1, cast a new actress to play Mama; 2. write into the story that she had passed away; 3. ignore her character and not mention her at all. Personally, I hate all 3 of those options. It will be just as sad to see a Goonies 2 without Mama as it was to watch the travesty of a Terminator 3 without Sarah Connor. But that aside...I am elated. Excited, and totally stoked that a sequel is finally being made! I have watched the Goonies so many times I can recite it line by line, and it feels like a memory from my childhood, as if I was there with them the entire time through the adventure. Maybe its sentimental and nostalgic and yes that can be dangerous when modern-day movie reality fails to live up to cherished childhood memories...but I am still very much looking forward to this. Its kind of the same feeling I got when playing the DuckTales Xbox game and hearing the same voices of all of the voice actors who did the DuckTales cartoon back in the 80s. So, fellow Goonies fans (if youre still reading, heh) ... where do you weigh in?
