Its hard to believe that this concept didnt survive and evolve throughout the years as an option in the RV industry. Fifth wheel trailers had traditionally been the bigger 34+ foot flagship models of the camper manufacturers during the 80s and 90s, but the early 2000s saw a lot of companies offering Fifths in the 14 - 20 range. Why the ultralite trailer design able to utilize a roof mounted hitch never gained favor I cant understand. Possibly the shift to the unibody design of the automobile chasis ànd the increasing size of the glass components detracted from the load bearing capabilities of the upper superstructure. Thinking a little more about it, I suppose there would be problems with door and roof pillars becoming misshapen over time as they are subjected to both the torquing and shearing forces of the trailer mass. A..who cares though if it was only good as a weekend tripper that shouldnt be driven at more than 50mph on well surfaced roads, If I found one out in somebodys paddock with the weeds growing up around it, Im thinking Id have to have it along with a Beetlebug to tow it with.
