Its infuriating when people talk about how there are no problems with fracking. Sun Media recently attacked Justin Trudeau for saying there needs to be a moratorium on hydraulic fracturing in Canada. They said, in spite of the evidence... What evidence and how do they discount the growing body of evidence that is painting a picture of just how risky it is? I wonder how people cant see it in the media. From peer reviewed studies to statements by doctors and geologists, from leaked reports and memos to first-hand accounts of people living in affected areas; the truth is coming out; there are serious problems with fracking. The Nova Scotia Hydraulic a Fracturing Review Panel report has been submitted to the Government of Nova Scotia, Department of Energy - a report Im still working my way through - and while it falls short of calling for a moratorium (which it feels is the responsibility of government and outside the purview of the report) it recommends taking a precautionary approach and not moving forward with it at this time, allowing for a period of further study until the full impact of this process can be learned. My own research has shown there are four major categories of risk: risks to the environment, risks to health, risks to public infrastructure and personal property, and risks to property value and hence quality of life. How many babies must be born with heart defects to pregnant mothers living within 1 kilometre of a fracking well before its not OK? How many women living in proximity to a well site must contract breast cancer before its considered not OK? Increased infertility, hormone imbalances, increased illnesses and diseases, chronic headaches, nausea and nosebleeds ... How much pain and suffering must there be before it is OK to call for a moratorium or better yet, a ban? And this is just the tip of an iceberg. It doesnt include risks in the three other areas I mentioned. It doesnt include the unidentified risks which continue to surface, adding to a growing body of evidence illustrating that fracking is a bad idea. Linked below is an article, detailing the accounts of the residents in the rural community of Penobsquis, NB whose quality of life is being affected by hydraulic fracturing in their area.
