Its interesting to note that the automobile had been around for decades before Ford started mass producing them. So, what made Ford so successful? The assembly line was a great idea, but other industries had been using them in ever increasing levels of complexity since the beginning of the industrial age. Textile mills were around long before Henry Ford was even born. Early cars were electric and suffered the same basic problems electric cars do today, batteries are expensive to replace and they had a limited range. Ford found an answer to this problem in a new technology called gasoline. It was a waste product of the oil refining process. It was also cheap and plentiful. Ford chose to run his cars on gasoline and suddenly the range of a vehicle was only limited to the size of its gas tank. A few decades ago acid rain was a problem. Once industry realized the acid was a recoverable product they could sell to other industries, it quit being a problem. Everything has potential energy and we are discovery new ways to tap into different forms of energy every day. Why do we want to limit that source of infinite potential to a small hand full of old technologies that other people regulate and manage? I would agree that fossil fuels are over used, but I would also argue this is due to the fact that the people at the top are either just lazy or more interested in keeping things the same rather than encouraging innovation.
