Its just a simple nail trim, right? It doesnt matter where you take your pet, right? It may not be as simple as you think. This week, we were devastated by the news shared by a fellow pug owner that lives out of state. A few days ago they took their three pugs to a well-known pet establishment to get their nails trimmed. They dropped off their dogs and 15 minutes later they received a call informing them that one of their beloved pugs went into cardiac arrest and died. When they got back as quickly as they could, staff was performing CPR on him, trying to bring him back. But it was too late, he was already gone. Yes, he died getting a nail trim. Why did this healthy dog go into cardiac arrest and die? He was placed in a choke hold during the nail trim and suffocated. This is in spite of the owner specifically reminding the staff of the proper technique of holding the pug for the nail trim. On top of it, every single nail had been cut too short and had been bled. How did the owner know? They found that styptic powder had been applied to every single nail. This poor little pug probably squirmed a little extra because of the discomfort, in addition to any anxiety he may have felt for the nail trim. What a horrible and completely avoidable tragedy. This news is so upsetting for us to hear. Sadly, as pug owners ourselves, we hear of these horrible experiences more often than you would think. Dogs are often anxious about nail trims. Some breeds already walk in with special circumstances, such as short faced breeds who can suffer respiratory distress very easily, long-backed breeds who can suffer injury if not held/supported properly, arthritic/dysplastic/senior dogs, etc. Even if a pet does not have a pre-existing condition, proper handling and care is crucial for their emotional health.
