Its not clear how big this will get, only that as September approaches it will get a lot bigger than it is now. A consensus is converging among progressive religious leaders and intellectuals the world over to make climate change THE spearhead of 21st century social reform. Based on the research I did for Waking the Buddha and Waking Up to the Dark, my guess is itll be hard to have a viable religion by mid-century that isnt founded squarely on ecological realities, and climate will be the realest thing around. The death of the old rape-and-pillage-the-earth religions of the past two to three thousand years wont be a pretty sight, but die they will. Francis seems to understand this and wants to transform the lead balloon of modern Catholic theology into a phoenix that, although it will still have to crash and burn, at least stands a good chance of reemerging from the ashes once the burning is done.
