Its not often that I post on here, but after being blatantly harassed by the City of Sunrise Police Department today I find it important to make others known of the way that business is conducted in the city of Sunrise. After leaving 24 Hour Fitness- Sunrise, FL Super Sport, I began heading south on Nob Hill Road where there were two police officers laughing and chatting on the sidewalk, cars parked in the turn lane, and their lights on. One of the cars was partially in the driving lane and was causing an obstacle for drivers. After being nearly hit by another car, I shouted get out of the road in the comfort of my own car. As I was approaching Sunset Strip (about a half mile down the road) I noticed a police car weaving through traffic, ultimately getting behind me and putting his lights on. After pulling off into a turn lane, the officer approached my car. When I inquired as to why I was pulled over (considering I was doing 38 in a 40), the officer informed me that its because my lights werent on. It was still daylight out, and my car is not only equipped with automatic lights on the highest sensitivity, but also has daytime running LED lights. When I showed the officer how my lights were set, he told me that if he was not familiar with Lexus and that if he were driving he wouldve put the lights on manually... to which I responded that it was a matter of opinion that he thought my lights would be on and if he had an issue with the sensitivity he could take it up with Lexus. He then asked for my license, registration, and insurance, which I immediately produced. When the officer noted that the insurance card from my wallet was outdated I responded that I needed to get the current one from the glove box, he ordered me to roll down the other window for the SECOND cop that had stopped his car / approached mine. (Keep in mind that this was supposedly for a headlight violation). Immediately following this, the officer returned to his car and left the second officer waiting next to me. (From this point forward I have a video recording) When the officer returned, he produced a ticket for not having a current insurance card to which I responded that he didnt give me the chance to produce it and he said, its like $10 or $15 and you just photocopy it and mail it in with the ticket, no points. As a citizen, the money isnt an issue, its the principle and the fact that the people who are hired to serve and protect us are out there harassing innocent people. When I contacted Sargent Stephen Allen, I was told that I was lucky I didnt get a more expensive ticket. A MORE EXPENSIVE TICKET?! I shouldnt have been pulled over in the first place. Apparently in the city of Sunrise, Florida, a police uniform gives their officers the ability to dole out citations on the basis of how they are feeling. So, Facebook friends, watch out for Officer J. Cooke, because hes out there fighting crime one outdated insurance card at a time. WPLG Local 10 NBC 6 South Florida WSVN-TV
