As a citizen of (pays), I respectfully and urgently ask you to stop the execution of Ray Jasper. I acknowledge the serious nature of the crimes of which Ray Jasper was convicted and I would like to convince you that I am not seeking to downplay the suffering caused by violent crime. Please note that a potential juror at his trial in January 2000 was excluded because, like Ray Jasper, he was black and that race-based jury selection is unconstitutional. Moreover he had poor legal help at his trial. I emphasize that international human rights standards expect governments to work toward abolition of the death penalty, a punishment incompatible with human dignity, which carries the risk of irrevocable error and has no proven deterrent effect.The death penalty is the ultimate denial of human rights. It is the premeditated and cold-blooded killing of a human being by the state. This cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment is done in the name of justice.It violates the right to life as proclaimed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Major Human Rights organizations oppose the death penalty in all cases without exception regardless of the nature of the crime, the characteristics of the offender, or the method used by the state to kill the prisoner.
