Its official, Japanese is the hardest language for native English - TopicsExpress

Its official, Japanese is the hardest language for native English speakers to learn. Average 2200 hours for State Department employees to learn, compared to 600 for Swedish (the easiest category). Also official, Japanese is the most isolated, meaning its grammar is completely different from all other grammars. Its easier for multilingual people to learn new languages, but of course the advantage fades if youre only multilingual in 1 related type of language, like I am (except for a tiny smattering of Cantonese). Its also harder for older people. So add a bit to that 2200 hours, say 3000 at least. So if I spend a half hour every day for 20 years I should be fluent in Japanese. Cool, Ill be 74 then. At least Ill be able to talk like a child in say about half the time, by 64. Well, Ive already spent a year, Im not giving up on my dream. The moral of the story: kids, dont wait until youre my age to learn languages, go to memrise NOW. DO IT NOW. DO EEET. Half hour a day, no money, you can afford it. Go.
