!!Its official!! The Flagstaff Freethinkers will be organizing a multi-organizational, city-wide day of service in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the 20th of January. We are following the lead of NAU Black Student Union (BSU) - who have an amazing 27 year history of advocating for the observance of this day which, tragically, has been a fight in this state. A history which we hope to highlight as part of the events of the weekend - which are still in the planning stage but will hopefully include marching with the BSU. Besides collaborating with BSU we are excited to include among our initial, and growing coalition, The Sunnyside Association, NAICL, the NAU Civic Service Institute, NAU Secualr Student Alliance, Killip Elementary School, Family Food Center and Food Bank, Family Shelter Services, Friends of Flagstaffs Future and some transfaith allies such as Beacon Unitarian Universalists, United Federated Church among others. We have also have a key collaborator at the City whose leadership will be instrumental. This should, if we do it right, be an amazing day, honoring an inspiring legacy and bringing to mind how important and critical the work still is. We hope to join with the BSU and the compassionate and engaged people of Flagstaff to not only help those populations in Flagstaff most affected by social and economic injustice, but also strengthen the sense of community in all of us. This is still in the early planning stages of this and there is much work left to do to make this a success but the response so far is extremely encouraging!
