Its remarkable how many times Ive seen cosplayers, famous or not, placed up on this pedestal, famous or not, but its not a pedestal for admiration. Oh no: its a glorified ledge to leave them open for any and all harshness. Now I understand, any artists should be willing to leave themselves up for criticism, and most of them do, but its gotten to the point where even the most normal things that a cosplayer does is weird, stupid, disrespectful, etc. Its gotten to the point where simple things like who your friends are or what youre planning to study or what music you listen to can earn you vicious judgement. A friend hurt you? How can you be so upset? Youre not really friends with them-- you met at a convention! Like that new videogame? Obviously not-- youre just faking for the attention! Youre a college student? So that means youre leeching off your parents and doing absolutely nothing productive and useful for society, of course! Someone harassed you? Oh come on, with a costume like that, how could you say you didnt want it? (Unfortunately, all of these examples are things Ive witnessed, either directed towards me or towards my friends) .... As you can see, the scenarios vary in seriousness, but my point still stands. Of course, these people could be right for certain cosplayers, but they could also be wrong; we cant generalize cosplayers, or any group of people, for better or for worse. Cosplayer A may only care about becoming a celebrity and getting their name know, but cosplayer B may be extremely genuine in using cosplay as a form of expressing their like for a series. Rather than trying to shove such a large group of people in a corner and label them with certain qualities, take the time to get to know them before you judge their life decisions. Remember all those old sayings (If you dont have anything nice to say, dont say it at all, Dont judge a book by its cover, Treat others as you would like to be treated, etc) you learnt as a kid? They may be repetitive, but they always apply, even for these weirdos dressing up in brightly colored wigs and inefficient outfits and battle armor. Because guess what? Theyre people too. //end rant
