Its so beautiful here, outside. I love autumn. I love the smells of woodsmoke and leaves, the wind whistling through town, the chill in the early morning, and the sound of dogs barking and porch doors slamming at dusk. The fields are golden with hay and dark green spotted with orange in the patches of pumpkins growing ripe on the vine. I love how people hold hands as they walk, and snuggle together under blankets on porch swings, and how, if you wander through town at just the right evening hour, you can see lit candles through the windows, the flames casting flickering shadows on dining room walls, and theres often a smell of something baking. Something laced with cinnamon, and bubbling with apples or peaches. Its the best time of year for remembering who you are, and where youve been, and for working hard and feeling how good it feels to split and stack a pile of logs, and for stocking up the pantry with flour and nutmeg and vanilla for all the baking ahead once the cold settles in.
