Its summer and our communities seem to be full of crews repaving, - TopicsExpress

Its summer and our communities seem to be full of crews repaving, or otherwise modifying, highways and byways of all sizes. Good enough, but there is always the lurking question of the detail of the planning and decision-making that went into these operations ... specifically, whether a particular infrastructure investment is optimal for its intended purpose out into the future. The layers of oversight and control are numbingly complex, but the guidelines -- and their underlying research -- are more accessible and transparent. And, to the point of this post, right here for our review and use. When all is said and done, the reports of the Transportation Research Board could be called the gold standard for understanding where we are headed, and what we ought to be doing to get there. A new one is just out, and we might just make it our duty as bicycle riders and advocates (and drivers and bus riders and consumers of delivered goods) to make sure that our planners at all levels are making the best use of this wonderful resource. trb.org/Main/Blurbs/171200.aspx
