Its that time of year. Summer. Sunshine. Smores. And that - TopicsExpress

Its that time of year. Summer. Sunshine. Smores. And that means, it is the time of year when I gently but rather emphatically remind you to please shop ethically for that smores chocolate. Just a quick reminder:: * 40% (or more) of the cocoa grown is done by slaves. 109,000+ (according to U.S. Dept. of State) child slaves harvest those cocoa beans by climbing trees and using machetes to cut them down and break open the pods. They are also exposed to pesticides. Most are snatched and trafficked across borders. * We spend $13 billion a year on chocolate * Cacao farming has stripped the world of hundreds of thousands of acres of rainforest. Organic and Fair Trade cocoa (in Latin America) are shade grown - under the canopy of the rain forest. So, please. Buy Fair Trade or Direct Trade chocolate this summer. It may be a bit more expensive, so perhaps just consume a few less smores. Great brands for Smores? I like Theo and Trader Joes. They are not as thick as other brands. And fun to experiment with all kinds of flavors! Oh, and get ready to be amazed at the TASTE of smores when using Fair Trade chocolate. Sweet Freedom. I do not want to eat someone elses tragedy. - Ashley Judd, Call + Response
