Its the 70th anniversary of the assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler carried out by a faction of the German military. Claus von Stauffenberg planted a bomb in his military headquarters but, through blundering and sheer luck, Hitler survived. His vengeance on the plotters was terrible. Note that these guys were disgusted with Hitler mostly because he was losing the war. If the military coup had taken place, the new German regime wouldnt have been as awful as the Nazis, and they might have sued for peace with the West and possibly even with the Russians, but they certainly wouldnt have just surrendered.
