Its the birthday of Edwin Hubble, who was born in 1889 in Marshfield, Missouri. Hubble studied mathematics and astronomy at the University of Chicago then law at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes scholar. After working as a high school teacher, he returned to Chicago and to astronomy, earning a PhD at the universitys Yerkes Observatory. In 1929, while working at the Mount Wilson Observatory in California, he combined the distances to galaxies measured via the period-luminosity relationship of certain variable stars and the galaxies spectrally determined redshifts. Plotting the two measurements against each other revealed that the universe is apparently expanding
