Its the birthday of Léon Teisserenc de Bort, who was born in 1855 in Paris. Teisserenc de Bort was a meteorologist - first with the French national meteorological office and later as a private researcher. He pioneered the use of high-altitude balloons to investigate the upper reaches of Earths atmosphere. In 1902 he announced the presence of a layer - the stratopause - where the atmospheres temperature stops decreasing with increasing altitude and begins to increase. Richard Assmann independently reached the same conclusion at the same time. He and Teisserenc de Bort are both credited with the discovery of the stratosphere.
