Its the same old song: just like last year Criminal District Court judges are trying to seize control of the independent Pretrial Services program. Is it any coincidence that the Court is trying to do this at a time when its budget is down and Pretrial Services budget is relatively healthy (because, unlike the Court, it is a program that saves the city money)? The purpose of pretrial services is to objectively tell the court which arrestees are a high risk to public safety and should be detained while awaiting trial, and which are a low risk and can be released. To do this effectively and objectively, politics must be set aside. Common sense (and best practices) therefore requires that any pretrial services program be independent of the elected politicians (i.e. Judges) it is advising.
