Its time for me to concede, Im afraid, that Ive become a cantankerous old iconoclast. Its not even Halloween and already the retail outlets are advertising for their big Christmas sales. There is only one thought ricocheting through whats left of my brain. Its not even ironic, only obscene, that a religious holiday predicated upon the myth that the Creator chose to become incarnate among the poorest of his human creations is celebrated by a three-month debauch of consumer spending. Could we possibly have made the whole premise more ridiculous? Perhaps Im just obtuse, but I hardly think our observances would merit the approval of the man who said Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Every time I see one of those bumper signs which declare Jesus is the reason for the season, I find myself muttering Only the excuse...
