Its very rare that I rant on Facebook but what Ive been seeing on the front covers of media as of late and the reactions of the public has had an impact on me. I am definitely not one to be the perfect role model of a practicing Muslim. Ill admit that I am one to laugh it off when a mate calls me a terrorist. But I have the upmost respect for those who have the diligence, patience and strength to practice on a daily basis and therefore, I will always be an advocate for fellow Muslims around me. Yes the media are not assisting with the publics view of Muslims in Australia. Yes, it is taking us back to 9/11 days with attacks on innocent people and institutions. However, instead of sitting on the defensive side playing the role of victims, we need to take action. If the younger generation are easily being influenced by extremists because of ease of access via the web, then instead of playing victims due to the minority, WE ( Including the AFIC) as the majority NEED TO BE MORE PRESENT on the web. EDUCATION is key. Leverage off the web via social media, highlight the similarities of Islam and other religions and show the true meaning of Islam. If we call ourselves Muslim, I think (especially during this time) we have a duty of care to at MINIMUM educate any ignorance that comes our way and help the younger generation understand that the best defence mechanism is not through violence or anger but through education. #educationisthekey
