It’s a Tuesday today and we would want to focus on a musician who we will remember as “The Bullet”, Calisto Nyamhute. The Bullet (38) is a talented vocalist, lead guitarist, who fronts a band called Sober Music Express. He took the music charts by storm in 1998, when he released his first album, “Ndakamupfimba Ndega”. In the same year, he released another album titled “Before Lunch Time.” His third album, “Sweetman” a six-track project was to follow the same year. Barely a year after later, Nyamhute went on to release yet another album, “Special Meat”, which changed his waning fortunes and propelled him to stardom. A series of other albums followed but none of them as good as “Special Meat”. Between 2000 and 2008 he managed to release a total of 5 albums. Thereafter, he released successive top of the charts six track albums, Petrol Perfume in 2001, Beautiful for me in 2002, Inside vocals in 2003, Womans legs in 2006 and Chimoko Chinoyera in 2008 And in 2009 his new album, “Chimoko Chinoyera”, did not do well prompting him to take a three-year sabbatical. In 2012 Calisto produced yet another album titled “Oil Oil”.” With a total of 10 albums to his name, the self proclaimed Pop star is also a business person and running numerous businesses in Harare. The song that propelled him to stardom “Special Meat,” was a hit that got so many interpretations. But out of all the interpretations, one that came out tops was the idea that the song was talking about love and making choices. Special Meat using the school of thought that the song is about love would mean your special one. But he went on to say “how can you tell this is fresh meat?” A big question that he poses in his song as one gets love, how do you make a choice between the many available options. Will that remain or become special will your choice be a choice that is special to you alone. Calisto who defined his music as sober music, managed to outline issues of life with his swag. Special Meat is a song that has and is still very relevant to our times and can be used for special analysis of how people would behave in times of love and making choices. For us the song is a masterpiece whose video will remain a classic and the artistic talent of Calisto were shown in the song as it spoke to many issues yet leaving the listener to discern the meaning and make a realistic conclusion in the process. He used Shona and English to express his ideas. A man who showed ability to use both languages in his many songs is still going strong and we hope he will gives us yet another masterpiece.
