"It’s a poor workman who blames his tools.” Just as any worker has tools, one the road to success, we also have tools for success. Our tools for success are not just limited to the tools we might use in our work -- hammers, saws, screwdrivers, etc., but are also tools that are within ourselves -- tools that only we can forge. These tools are not crafted by Stanley or Craftsman or Ridgid. They weren’t made by Fluke, Klein, or Black and Decker. They aren’t the kind of tools that you can buy at Home Depot, nor the ones you can purchase from Amazon. These tools are ones that we make ourselves -- the tools of self-esteem, hope, energy, determination, and a positive attitude that caps it all -- the ultimate tools of success. Just as a carpenter might sharpen his saw, or a builder would protect his hammer from rust, we must work on our success tools. We must keep them from contamination, sharpen our skills, and keep our skills in good working order. We do this by using these tools often, because a tool unused will often fail from neglect, where a well-used tool will keep working for a long time. We sharpen our tools for success by learning more, by challenging ourselves, and by helping others to develop their abilities. We use these tools even when we are just getting used to them, because no craftsman gained skill with a tool unless he or she used them extensively.
