It’s always hard to go back. Sometimes it’s impossible. If an artist was significant once upon a time they might not be significant now, not to listen to now. They’ll still be significant historically but unless you were part of that time you won’t hear why they were significant, because there’s a good chance they’ll have influenced what came after. We might hear that, and not where it came from. Life is hard for our musical heroes of the past. We want them to stay in one place. They might want to do what they were doing when we first discovered them, and keep imagining, inventing pushing at boundaries. Mick Jagger is happy playing the old Rolling Stones songs. Keith Richard wants to write new ones. When Bruce Springsteen was here last “fans” complained that they weren’t hearing their favourite songs. Some artists of the past don’t have songs we heard over and over. Some artists of the past didn’t make us sing along. Some artists just added excitement that inspired other excitement, and we listen now and that excitement isn’t there if you weren’t there. It’s not their fault. It doesn’t make them less important if we listen now and don’t “get it”.
