It’s been more than 3 months since Super Typhoon Haiyan – the strongest typhoon ever to make landfall on record – hit and wreaked havoc to the lives and properties of our brothers and sisters in Central Visayas especially in our hometown of Leyte and Samar. The Leyteños and Samareños in Japan (LSJ) would like to offer our sincere and humble thanks to all who came together in the face of this extraordinary disaster. To the Japanese and Filipino communities in Japan, to our brothers and sisters on the ground who lifted themselves up, dusted themselves off and jumped in to help their fellow countrymen and women, thank you very much. Please find below LSJ’s report on the Relief Distribution Project for the survivors of Typhoon Haiyan (aka Yolanda). Relief Distribution Project (1st Phase) On November 24, 2014, in cooperation with the Extension Services Program Department of the Eastern Visayas State University’s Director Prof. Faustito Aure, the Immaculate Conception Parish of Sogod, Southern Leyte and Fr. Raymond Mazo, the first phase of our Relief Distribution Project took place in the remote and interior communities of McArthur Leyte. Here’s a brief summary of the first phase Relief Distribution Project: Relief Recipients communities: i. Barangay Capudlusan - 121 Households plus 11 special packs to Barangay Leaders who helped us with the Distribution. ii. Barangay Osmeña - 148 Households and 11 special packs to 11 barangay leaders iii. Barangay Casuntingan - 256 Households and 11 special packs for 11 barangay leaders iv. Barangay Josefa - 88 Households and 11 special packs to barangay leaders v. Barangay Danaw - 200 households and 11 barangay leaders plus 183 packs were given to roadside households in Barangay Bacolawehay in Abuyog. We were able to share 1,051 relief packs, composed of, 3 kilos of rice, 3 assorted canned goods, 3 packs of noodles, water, 1 box of Match and a pack of salt to 5 remote and interior communities of Mac Arthur, Leyte. Total Expense incurred: JPY 200,000 Relief Distribution Project (2nd Phase) Following on the heels of the success of the 1st Phase Relief Distribution Project, the second phase of LSJ’s relief mission was done on 11 February 2014, again, in cooperation with the Extension Services Program Department of the Eastern Visayas State University, in the district of San Jose, Tacloban City – a place almost flattened and wiped out by Super Typhoon Haiyan. Relief Recipients communities: 1. Residents living in tents on the coastal area of San Jose 2. Barangay Alimasag We were able to distribute more than 600 relief packs composed mostly of clothing, toothbrush, dental floss, mask, etc. Total Expense Incurred: JPY 91,000. While most of the contents in the relief packs were donations sent to us by friends in the Filipino and International community in Japan, the expenses incurred were mostly for the freight cost of sending the balikbayan boxes to Tacloban and expenses on the ground during the execution of the Relief Distribution. While LSJ is proud, honored and humbled to be a vehicle to deliver aid to our brothers and sisters in Leyte and Samar, true thanks go to every donor, partner institution/organization, and supporter of this effort in every capacity. The success of these efforts is a direct result of an enormous team effort, one that goes beyond any one individual or organization. As we count our blessings and as we continue making better days here in Japan, let us not forget that there are still thousands who are deprived, depressed and underprivileged in our beloved hometown. Once again, LSJ would like to acknowledge and thank these generous donors. On behalf of LSJ, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your continued support.
